About Elliot J. Rattner

I founded Northwatch Legal with a simple but unwavering purpose: to protect and stand watch for those whose voices too often go unheard.

The criminal justice system only functions when every part of that system does their part. Unfortunately, that’s rarely the case. My practice is grounded in a deep commitment to fairness and accountability at all stages of the criminal process, from first contact with law enforcement through appeal.

In 2022, I was honored with the Public Service Award from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law for my work investigating constitutional violations and police misconduct, as well as examining the limitations of hate crime statutes in preventing bias-motivated violence. That commitment to integrity, advocacy, and compassion continues to guide my practice today.

At Northwatch Legal, I bring that same sense of duty to every client I serve. My representation focuses on who you are, not just what circumstances brought you here. I believe that representation should be tailored to you, and should embrace cultural sensitivity and trauma informed advocacy.

Of note: I pride myself on being a safe and affirming space for LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC clients. As a member of these vibrant and diverse communities myself, I understand firsthand how essential fearless, zealous advocacy is — even for issues others take for granted.

Rooted in the values of service, vigilance, and justice, Northwatch Legal is built to protect the freedoms and communities we all depend on, because in every fight for what’s right, someone must stand watch.

Outside of the court room, I am proud to serve as a commissioner for Traverse City’s Human Rights Commission and to be a member of the Northwestern Michigan’s Independent Legal Counsel for the ACLU MI. I also serve as the vice chair for the Oakland County Bar Association’s Solo/Small Firm Committee, and an active member in the State Bar of Michigan’s LGBT Public Policy, Legislation and Amicus Committee.
